Mind Games: Conquering Your Destructive Thoughts.

Movement Live Notes

Friends, this week, we want to deal with conquering your destructive thoughts. This is what all of us need to do today. Frankly, some of us woke up with destructive thoughts, and we need to conquer them. Scripture tells us that we are more than conquerors, and if we are more than conquerors, then we have to learn that we can conquer those destructive thoughts. Because we are more than conquerors, and we need to conquer our negative thoughts. It means that we are above and better than the negative thoughts that we have been carrying. So, what we need to do, and before we go any further, let's just pray that our hearts will be open to receive the rest of this Movement LIVE experience. Please take a few moments to do this. Let's find our space to truly experience an encounter with God.

Now that we have done this let's discuss the ways to conquer our destructive thoughts. The more you think a thought, the easier it is for you to think that thought. Meaning, the more time we spend on a thought, the easier it becomes for us to allow ourselves to keep thinking it. As we talk about conquering and destroying our negative thoughts, we want to bring to your attention cognitive biases. Cognitive biases are mistakes that we make in reasoning based on personal experiences or on our preferences. There are decisions that we make and thoughts that we have based off of our cognitive bias, which ultimately shapes our filter. This causes us to filter things or filter thoughts based off of our cognitive biases. So, if I am biased towards a particular thing, then my thoughts will be filtered through the bias that I maintain. In other words, there is a mental filter through which we think. This filter, or cognitive bias, impacts how we interpret our experiences. We also refer to these filters as narrative scripts.

A cognitive bias is a default filter. It is prewired, and many of those biases were caused by our experiences throughout life. These biases shape how we see life, shape how we move in life, and shape how we feel about life. It is a mental filter that impacts how we think. Ladies and gentlemen, if we want to change how we feel, I'm going to say we need to change our filters. For example, when the AC isn't cooling the house, and we have to call and have it repaired, the technician first checks the filters.  He will usually say, "If the filter is dirty, if the filter is blocked and is not allowing air to flow through it smoothly, then it will hinder how [cool] the rest of the house feels.” So, again I say, if we want to change how we feel, we need to change our filters.

Our goal is to walk alongside you as we conquer our negative thoughts. Let’s take a moment and go through the archives of our negative thoughts. Identify your top two from this week, and then open up your heart to allowing the Lord to help with changing your filter.

Lord, we know that we need You in our lives. We come into this moment asking that you would help us to understand who You are in our lives. Our thoughts tend to lean on ungodly things, things that are of our own hearts, and not always the word God. We are praying right now that You would fix our minds to actually conquer our destructive thoughts. As we're holding these in our mental space right now, we are asking that through Your love, You bring peace.
