Father’s Day: A Few Good Men

Movement Live Notes

Since today is the day we have designated to celebrate fathers, we wanted to spend some time defining what a good father is and what we have to do to become good fathers. There are some prerequisites to being a good father. Being a good father, first, requires one to be a good man. Ezekiel 22:30 says, “I searched for a man among them who would build up a wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.” When we define good men based on the standard of scripture, we can see that there are many who fall short of this. Good men are men who have learned how to lean and depend on the Lord. In order to be good men, we must trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not on our own understanding but in all our ways; we must acknowledge the Lord so that He may direct our paths.

Good men know how to lean on the Lord. They do not lean on liquor or a lady, but they lean on the Lord. These things do not provide salvation; the Lord does. This is why we must learn how to learn on the Lord. In order to be good fathers, we must be good men, and good men learn how to lean on Jesus. Not just for salvation but for our strength. The fact of the matter is that every follower of Christ has the proclivity to get weary at any point on this journey. This is why we must learn to lean on Him for strength, for rest, for salvation.

Brothers and sisters, we have to learn how to lean on the Lord. Do you trust the Lord enough to lean on Him, for your strength, for your salvation, for your sound mind? God gives to all liberally. So, why not trust and lean on Him? If we want to make sound decisions in our lives, we have to lean on the One who gives us the understanding to make those decisions. Some of us make foolish decisions, but we do this because we have not learned how to lean. But yet we say, “we're good.” Good men and good women have learned how to lean.

Have you learned how to lean this morning? Are you actually leaning on God this morning? Because it's a prerequisite. Being a good father requires that you be a good man, and if you are a good man, then you've learned how to master the lean. You've mastered leaning on him for salvation, for strength, for supply, and for soundness. Men who have learned how to lean can then learn how to lead. So many men want to lead but are not leaning on God. We want to lead because leading looks good. Each of us desires either a good father in our lives or we want to be a good father. If we are going to become good fathers, we've got to understand that being a good man is the prerequisite.

Brothers and sisters, we must learn how to lean. Our encouragement this week is that find we would all find ourselves in a quiet place with God, offering all that we have and asking Him to help us to learn how to lean on Him. This an intricate piece of the puzzle. Dedicate time to experiencing God, family, and friends, and learn how to lean.
